Meridian and Unusual Whales comparison for research workflows

Compare documented market-record tools, data timing and access before choosing a research workflow.

TL;DR

Unusual Whales advertises paid real-time options flow, a free delayed dashboard, disclosure datasets and separate API/MCP access. Meridian offers free public dashboards and a confluence research index; full programmatic data has a separate access contract. Compare source definitions, dates and entitlements. Pricing checked 2 October 2026.

Compare the Research Workflow

These services organize market records for different research workflows. Start with the record you need: an options trade, a congressional disclosure, an insider filing or a reported institutional holding. Then compare its source, date, access conditions and available context.

This comparison uses public pages and documented contracts checked on 2 October 2026. Vendor-advertised features are identified as such; paid accounts and authenticated API/MCP tools were not exercised. 'Not verified' means the evidence was insufficient, not that a feature is absent. Prices and access can change; recheck the linked official pages before choosing a product.

Platform Overview

Unusual Whales

Unusual Whales advertises real-time options flow and alerts on paid dashboard plans; its free dashboard shows delayed data. Documented tools include unusual-activity indicators, filters, sweeps, blocks and Greeks. It also provides congressional disclosure data and published reconstructed portfolio analysis. Mobile alerts and community access are advertised. See dashboard plans and developer tools.

Its developer documentation also describes executive and director insider transactions, 13F holdings and portfolio changes, ETF tools, off-lit trade context and crypto prices and whale trades. Compare chain coverage and the applicable plan rather than treating the service as an options-only dataset.

Meridian

The public confluence view lists seven core categories: Congress, ARK, off-exchange records, institutional 13F, insiders, followed managers and short interest. Supplemental filings are labeled separately. This is a category taxonomy, not seven statistically independent datasets; followed-manager and institutional views can overlap.

Use the confluence view to compare the available source categories for a ticker, then inspect underlying records, dates, missing inputs and conflicts. Counts vary with the current data and filters; inspect the displayed scope and source dates. Agreement can prioritize a research question; it does not establish a probability of profit, participant motive or a trading recommendation.

Read the Records in Context

Options flow and off-exchange activity

A US-equity options-flow integration was not verified for Meridian. A record alone does not establish whether a trade is directional, a hedge, a roll or routine portfolio activity. An options execution and a daily off-exchange aggregate describe different activity.

Unusual Whales documents off-lit trade records with national best bid and offer (NBBO) context and price-level analysis. Meridian's off-exchange metrics use different source definitions; compare the units and timestamps.

Meridian's documented off-exchange analytics use FINRA daily short-sale volume and a rolling short-volume-ratio baseline. This is aggregate reported activity, not a live ATS execution tape; a z-score does not identify accumulation or statistical significance by itself. Read the source date, short volume ratio, available rolling baseline and any available model flag. A missing baseline or unavailable source leaves the result incomplete.

FINRA's daily short-sale volume is not short interest or consolidated activity across all exchanges. Its separate OTC ATS/non-ATS transparency reports contain delayed aggregates: weekly Tier 1 reports have a two-week delay; Tier 2 and OTC reports have a four-week delay. Compare records with the same units and time basis. See FINRA short-sale volume and OTC transparency.

Congressional, insider and institutional disclosures

Review congressional disclosures and compare other available records for the same ticker. Committee-level analysis, congressional cluster tools and an interactive Meridian backtest engine were not verified here.

Congressional disclosures report past transactions; covered periodic transaction reports are due by the earlier of 30 days after awareness or 45 days after transaction. Filing/publication and trade dates differ. House and Senate disclosures are published through their respective systems. This deadline is not a mandatory waiting period or a fixed disclosure lag. See the House Ethics reporting calculator.

For insider research, inspect reported Form 4 transactions, transaction codes, filer role and dates when available. A filing does not by itself establish motive or a future return. For institutional research, review available 13F records and their reporting periods. Coverage and position-change interpretation depend on the underlying filing; a quarterly disclosed holding is not a live position.

ETF and crypto records

Review supported ETF holdings or issuer trade notifications and their dates. Holdings changes and trade notifications are not ETF cash inflows or outflows. ARK's issuer notifications are end-of-day and incomplete; upload timestamps need not be trade timestamps.

Unusual Whales documents crypto prices and whale-trade tools. For Meridian, consult current Meridian documentation for any supported crypto dataset, source date and availability. DeFi/DEX coverage and crypto contributions to confluence were not established in this comparison.

Pricing and Programmatic Access

Checked 2 October 2026: Unusual Whales' delayed dashboard is free. Retail Basic, Pro and Max are $50, $75 and $120 per month; annual plans are $504, $756 and $1,224. The free dashboard delays flow by two trading days, news by 15 minutes and alerts by 30 minutes. API plans are separate: Basic is $150/month and Advanced $375/month. These are named products, not a maximum cost for every bundle or business use. See retail pricing and API access.

Explore Meridian's public dashboards for free. Some expanded results require a free account; consult the current pricing page for limits and Pro availability. On 2 October 2026, Pro was labeled Coming soon; this comparison does not establish a purchasable Pro subscription.

Discovery endpoints and bounded sample previews are free. Full programmatic data is subject to the current developer access contract, including x402 where supported. Check the documentation for any plan eligibility and limits. Meridian documents MCP tools and selected canonical v1 API routes for research workflows, subject to the listed access contract. Use the current developer documentation rather than a marketing endpoint count. See developer documentation and pricing for entitlement and limits. Authenticated API/MCP execution was not verified in this comparison.

Unusual Whales also documents API/MCP access. Compare supported tools, entitlements, response limits and licensing rather than endpoint marketing counts. The 2025 congressional report describes published politician-portfolio backtesting; that does not establish an arbitrary user-defined strategy engine.

A Ticker Research Workflow

If paid options-flow tools fit your research, inspect the underlying record in Unusual Whales. You can then compare dated disclosure records in Meridian using this workflow:

  1. Open Congress and Dark Pool separately.
  2. Select a ticker and compare the dated records. Distinguish a transaction date from a filing, publication or collection date.
  3. Review that ticker in Confluence using the available source-count and direction controls.
  4. Inspect missing inputs, source overlap and conflicting records before drawing a conclusion.
  5. For programmatic research, check the developer contract and the access scope for each route or tool.

Evaluate access costs and source overlap if you use both services. This comparison does not rank filing-to-platform speed, interface quality or trading performance.

Takeaway

Choose a workflow by the records and access you need. Unusual Whales documents options-flow and broader market-data tools; Meridian's public confluence view supports ticker cross-referencing. Check the underlying evidence and current access terms before treating either as sufficient for your research.
